This mouthpiece is the result of yet another winning collaboration between Aaron Drake and the world's top professional saxophone players. Boney originally contacted Aaron to request several Drake mouthpieces to try. Over time, the dialog between them grew into a custom mouthpiece project. Boney was seeking a mouthpiece that would combine the warmth and control associated with the best ebonite mouthpieces, with power and projection like a metal version. The Boney James Masters Series delivered exactly that. This mouthpiece incorporates a step baffle, a rounded baffle transition and a special reverse taper in the chamber. It allows the player a tremendous amount of projection and expressiveness while stabilizing the pitch. The unique, proprietary mouthpiece material is an industry first - incorporating ceramic with resin to achieve new levels of resonance.

In 1990, Aaron Drake released the world’s first professional quality ceramic saxophone mouthpiece. This represents the most remarkable mouthpiece innovation in over half a century. Drake’s Resonance Chambers represent an evolutionary leap forward in the development of woodwind mouthpieces and their tonal characteristics.
We are now offering this model with a Brass Resonance Chamber. The addition of the Brass chamber offer the harmonic overtones of brass into the sound and enhances the ease of the Altissimo register. The projection qualities are also greatly increased by the addition of the brass chamber.
Brass Resonance Chamber Mouthpieces encapsulate an exposed brass ring into the Vintage Resin mouthpiece. The result of combining these two materials is a broader spectrum of overtones than with brass or hard rubber mouthpieces. The Brass Resonance Chamber model outweighs the corresponding standard mouthpiece by approximately 30%. This added mass creates unbelievable amounts of resonance, harmonics and projection.

The Brass Resonance Mouthpieces offer a robust, husky tone with plenty of harmonics in the sound. It is somewhat more “spread” than the Ceramic version. It has impeccable intonation and presents consistent tonal characteristics over the entire range of the horn. This unique configuration also allows easier access to the altissimo register.

Background

Jerry Bergonzi is a world-renowned jazz saxophonist, composer and educator. He first gained recognition while touring and recording as a guest on several Dave Brubeck ensemble tours, and later held the saxophone chair in the Dave Brubeck Quartet from 1979-1982.

The Presence Masters Series Mouthpiece was sparked by Bergonzi's love of classic short shank Soloist models, played by such greats as Joe Henderson. There is a certain presence in Henderson's sound that surrounds the player and the listener. Full, rich, deep and even haunting are words that could describe this presence.

Design

Aaron Drake's Presence design is informed by the Soloist models of the classic era, while adding innovations that inspire modern saxophonists.

Based on the same essential mouthpiece played by Joe Henderson, the Presence incorporates a "U" shaped chamber with flat side walls. This acoustic design creates a specific feel to the air flow and projects a very substantial core tone. Drake's design modifications optimize the Presence for larger tip-openings - something that was a challenge for players of the traditional version.

The Bergonzi Presence mouthpiece is made from Drake's unique and proprietary Vintage Resin material. The exacting design and the specific material produce an unparalleled response, brilliant projection, spot-on intonation and ease of expression.

Sound

The Presence presents a huge warm core with plenty of depth. It can be played mellow but still has plenty of pop and liveliness in the sound. The Presence helps facilitate the type of delivery Joe Henderson was famous for.

This model has been developed through a close collaboration between Aaron Drake and Jerry Bergonzi. It has taken over two years to refine the various design elements incorporated in this model. The fundamental design is based on Jerry's personal Early Babbit "EB". The classic "crescent" shaped baffle transitions to a recalibrated floor contour and ultimately a round large chamber. The tip and side rails are finished to the exact specifications that Jerry prefers - this slightly wider contour helps to generate a thickness and stability in the sound and attack.
