Saxophone Mouthpieces
A revolutionary design material for saxophone mouthpieces with
the power of metal and a new dimension in tone, stability and responsiveness.

Handcrafted in the tradition of the great vintage mouthpieces, we have combined the essential acoustic design elements with this innovative material, and produced a mouthpiece of unsurpassed quality.  Our philosophy is that, in order to get the tone quality, and depth of sound that many players seek in vintage mouthpieces, we must get back to the basics of fabrication.

Acoustic Design

Elements                     Tip rail and baffle

We have given very careful consideration to the point of wind delivery.  The tip rail is shaped to the exact contour of the reed.  Each rollover baffle is given a slight crescent shape (just like the New York vintage Meyer Brothers and Florida era Otto Links). This beautiful organic shape is not found in modern production line mouthpieces, and we feel that it contributes to the quality of tone.

            Sculpted Inner Side Walls

The inner side walls are meticulously sculpted and rounded from the tip of the mouthpiece into the chamber.  This opens the wind delivery, and creates a big, fat, round tone.

Chamber

Another crucial acoustic element is the chamber dimensions and shaping.  Each large chamber mouthpiece is opened beyond the end of the floor slope to a larger diameter than the shank diameter, contributing further to the depth and presence of the tone.

Organic Shapes

Another truly unique aspect of our mouthpieces is that there are no sharp / “machined” edges.  The interior is comprised of curved and rounded shapes, an aspect that lends itself to a natural flow of the air column.

Final Play Testing and Overtone Tests

All of our mouthpieces undergo final play tests.  We check each mouthpiece for a balanced overtone series and even, accurate wind delivery from low Bb to altissimo F (F above palm key).

Ceramic Porcelain Material

This truly unique porcelain ceramic material has the highest surface density of any material, offering the player an immediate, crystal clear response. Articulating fast staccato passages is noticeably easier than other Mouthpieces, and dynamic capabilities are also heightened.

The natural composition of ceramic offers the artist incredible intonation stability and unsurpassed response throughout the entire range of the instrument. Due to the very high surface density of glazed ceramic, a nearly frictionless path is created for the wind. Drake Ceramic Mouthpieces will never warp, corrode, or change in any way.
